Dr Akintunde Orunmuyi speaks to ecancer about his new ecancermedicalscience article titled, ‘Underutilisation of nuclear medicine scans at a regional hospital in Nigeria: need for implementation research’.
He explains that currently there is a very small footprint of nuclear medicine in Nigeria despite recent efforts to train doctors for a larger number of centres.
Dr Orunmuyi states that the situation in Nigeria largely resembles that of the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa but he points out that South Africa is much further ahead in the field.
Despite the challenges, Dr Orunmuyi sees a bright future for nuclear medicine in Nigeria and Africa, highlighting the importance of implementation research for new technologies in order to better implement them in Nigeria.
