The European Union is a political and economic bloc made up of 28 members.

It has a population of 512 million.
The EU’s gross domestic product was 15.3 trillion euros in 2017, making it one of the world’s biggest trade players, along with the US and China.

Originally a six-nation bloc created in 1957, the European family, whose motto is ‘United in diversity’ has gone through several enlargement phases.

To join, candidates must prove they’re committed to respecting and promoting key values like democracy, human rights and a functioning market economy.

They must also comply with all EU standards and rules.

Any bid to join the EU must have the backing of the nation concerned, either through a parliamentary vote or a national referendum.

Membership is granted when all EU institutions and member states have given their consent.

There are currently five official candidate countries: the Republic of North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania and Turkey. And there are two potential candidates: Bosnia and Hercegovina and Kosovo.
