The European Union is a political and economic bloc made up of 28 members.
Originally a six-nation bloc created in 1957, the European family, whose motto is ‘United in diversity’ has gone through several enlargement phases.
They must also comply with all EU standards and rules.
Any bid to join the EU must have the backing of the nation concerned, either through a parliamentary vote or a national referendum.
There are currently five official candidate countries: the Republic of North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania and Turkey. And there are two potential candidates: Bosnia and Hercegovina and Kosovo.
