Our CEO, Mark Rickmeier, had a good conversation with Edwin J. Frondozo on the Business Leadership Podcast about the role of leadership in Innovation.
Innovation is NOT one person’s job nor does it happen in a flash of brilliant insight. Innovation is the result of incremental iterations on an idea. It is the role of the leadership team to create the necessary space to think and to foster a culture of experimentation.
People should not expect a Chief Innovation Officer (or a Chief Executive Officer for that matter) to generate the ideas of the future in isolation. Rather, they should encourage design thinking within their culture, give space for people to think (without being chronically busy), and celebrate failure when people get it wrong (because that is part of the process of learning).
