Exhibition documentation on the occasion of “On Paper” at Deli Gallery.
11/8/2022 – 12/22/2022
Deli Gallery is pleased to present On Paper, a series of new mixed media and sculptural works by Devin N. Morris. His interior landscapes bend memories into form- merging found materials with figures on paper to generate meticulously rendered environments. Through his multifaceted practice combining drawing, sculpture, printmaking, and collage, Morris reimagines interpersonal and communal spaces where theory and the practice of kindness are indistinguishable.
“In theory” might be different from what is lived. The image being a projection of a memory, or many remembered or conjured ideas materialized into an image, plays on both sides of that notion. What looks good on paper might not be the realized experience. “In practice” is different than in mind. “In theory” is different from reality. A painting isn’t a home, it’s a facade of materials that helps to produce a mirage.
The statement “on paper” helps us consider that there might be more to perception than what we perceive in projections. There is a deeper self that yearns for an actual reality. Maybe I’m in between two moments in time, before and after the projection. Before and after the voice. Living through the siren.
