For Mexican composer Guillermo Galindo, the idea of having Cage’s Variations II performed by a mariachi band, was a great opportunity to appease two seemingly irreconcilable worlds that were integral parts of his musical life.
The process of becoming a mediator between Western Avant Garde music and the ultimate Mexican folk traditions through John Cage’s graphically notated score was for him, an endeavor beyond fascination.

Peter’s Edition score of Cage’s Variations II, consists of a set of transparent sheets of plastic printed with 6 lines and 5 dots to be connected within each in order to be translated into distinct musical parameters. For this performance, Galindo re-contextualizes the abstract musical ideas behind the late 20th century’s Avant Garde and the Fluxus movements giving them them a new meaning. Lighted as godlike creatures from another dimension, the mariachi ensemble stands solid on the proscenium feeding the audience’s hunger with crumbs of sound. A musical drama that plays with the audience’s expectations of what a Mexican party entertainment band is supposed to provide them with. A 15 minute experience that transitions from comfort to desperation from anxiety to stasis and from anticipation to relief.
