The Brain Piece (2015-17) premiered at New York Live Arts in June 2017 as a two-part piece:
Part One is an immersive experience, Oberfelder used the whole architecture of New York Live Arts with dancers as guides. The audience was divided into small groups and led into different experiences of their brain. From, ‘carnival of the mind’, memory/ smell,’ a tactile head massage, to an onstage giant world of the brain, where all audience participants converged in a web with synapses sparking. In Part Two, three dancers onstage embody perceptual play, puzzles and patterns of the brain activity.
The three main performers are Pierre Guilbault, Mary Madsen, and Hannah Wendel joined by twelve additional “brain docents.: Text by Jody Oberfelder, Music by Daniel Wohl and Missy Mazzoli. Film by Jody and Eric Siegel, Lighting by Kate Bashore.
