“Only organic humus makes for life. Plants are the great intermediaries by which the elements in rocks, converted by microorganisms into humus, can be made available for animal and man to build into flesh, bone and blood.” – Dr. Alexis Carrel
In a very real way we are what we eat. The quality of the food and medicine we put in our body is directly tied to our health, and the health and nutrition of plants passes on to the animals eating them. The source of this health is in the soil – it comes from humus.
The beautiful people at Briceland Forest Farm understand this on a very deep level, knowing that the quality of the the produce they grow comes from the quality of the humus they grow from. They cover crop, companion plant and mulch to assist in the building of soil, and every year they make incredible, nutritious, delicious compost. The process of composting closes the loops on the farm, turning waste into the most valuable life giving force in the universe – humus.
Animal manure, green waste, oak leaves, woodchips, chipped cannabis stalks, kelp and so much good microbial food go into making this magic happen. By layering carbon and nitrogen rich ingredients in a lasagna style while keeping air and temperature in mind, you create an incredible microbial feast that ends with perfect beautiful humus. The veggies from this farm stay fresh with astonishing longevity. You can taste the love in the food they grow and the quality of the cannabis makes your taste buds dance and your mind soar.
It was a real treat to be able to document this beautiful compost building process. We hope you enjoy and learn something from this short film by La Osa and Biovortex. Thank you to the extremely talented Taso Teklife for providing us with original music and amazing sound engineering skills.
