Upon receiving an email with this theme as my writing prompt, I immediately began brainstorming ideas. Many stories came to mind, but this one was by far the best. It truly used the word “bright” with all the feelings that word evokes– combining the brightness (intelligence, wisdom) of the actor and the brightness (light) of the surroundings. The reason why we see the actress bathed in light more than the actor is to represent her innocence and his coldness. The actor is slightly above everything. He teases her, almost makes fun of her despair. However, he is patient with her.

The cigarette at the beginning represents calmness. The actor is relaxed and does not show the slightest hint of anxiety. Towards the end, he offers her a cigarette, a part of his calmness. She takes it and waits for the sun to rise. The sun in this film could be the representation of many things, but I view it as a symbol of hope for a “brighter” future. However, by using a simple fade out at the end I was able to add a sense of that brighter future never coming for the character.

This short film combines fictional and factual work. Its fictional part is in the dialogue the two characters lead. They talk as if they were in the afterlife. Nevertheless, there are no fictional beings or elements other than the dialogue.

In this film, I was the scriptwriter, director and editor. I chose the actors who best fit the vibe of the script and then within a limited amount of time we filmed it in my home country, Slovakia. I required the contribution of the two actors and cinematographer. Despite the actress’ Slovak origins, her English language skills were impressive and she was able to perform her lines without any difficulties. I chose to film using a variety of different angles, such as a wide shot to establish the setting, medium shots of both characters individually, and also a medium two shot over the shoulders at the end. The production was managed with ease due to the actors’ cooperative nature and the editing involved the dubbing of classical music to highlight the eerie otherworldly nature of the ‘place’ the characters had found themselves in.
